Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians

Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson  308 pp.

Alcatraz Smedry comes from a long line of family with the names of prisons. He also breaks things unintentionally and it has caused him to be tossed out of multiple foster homes. For his thirteenth birthday he receives a curious package of sand from the parents he thought were dead. The sudden appearance of his grandfather, Leavenworth Smedry, leads to the revelation that nothing in Alcatraz's life is what it seemed and that breaking things is Alcatraz's special power. The stolen sand is destined to be turned into special lenses that provide powers to the "Oculators". Alcatraz teams up with cousins he never met before (Sing (Sing), Quentin, & Bastille) to battle the Librarians and recapture the special lenses. While all this is happening, Alcatraz learns more about his parents and how the Librarians are altering information to keep the "Hushlanders" under control. This is the first book in a chapter book series.
