An Untamed State

An Untamed State / Roxane Gay 370 pgs.

Mireille Duval Jameson is an ass kicking lawyer with strong ideas about most things.  She is married to a Nebraska farm boy and this book traces some of their relationship.  But the center of the story is the horrible kidnapping of Mireille when she is visiting her parents in Haiti.  Her father is a very successful business man who worked his way up from dirt-poor poverty and he is convinced if he pays the ransom for Mireille that he puts the rest of the family in harms way as the kidnappers will work their way through everyone.  BUT, by not paying quickly, Mireille is subjected to horrible torture and pain.  But this book is more than the kidnapping.  A large part of it takes place AFTER her release and shows her dealing with the aftermath of the death of her spirit while in captivity.  I have to say that reading about the kidnapping was quite horrible.  Perhaps I've read too many books lately that have a violent core.  But this one is different because it shows the strength of the victim and also the broken parts.  I have to say, I loved Mireille's mother-in-law Lorraine the best.  Lorraine is another no-bullshit woman who at first we see as an enemy. In the end, you realize nobody knows Mireille and what she needs MORE than Lorraine.

Roxane Gay is a fine writer and I admire this book but it was, at times, difficult to read.  I think I'll focus on some lighter stuff for awhile.
