Freakboy

Freakboy by Kristin Elizabeth Clark  444 pp.

This novel in verse explores the lives of three teens who are all wrestling with gender issues in some way. Brandon is trying to figure out why, at times he feels not quite masculine enough although he enjoys sex with his girlfriend. He is frequently the brunt of  derogatory comments from both his father and the high school wrestling coach. Brandon's girlfriend, Vanessa, also a wrestler, doesn't understand Brandon's moodiness. She also feels she will never have the true "win" she aspires to until her opponents can forget that she's a girl. Brandon's chance meeting with a good looking girl named Angel, a transgender teen who helps him face feelings he has that he may not, in fact, be male. This tackles a serious and touchy subject with tact and respect. Each teen is given their own voice (and font).
