Turn of Mind / Alice LaPlante 307 p.

Looking to be totally consumed by a story?  Pick this up, unless the specter of Alzheimer's scares the crap out of you.  Come to think of it, that's surely part of the creepy appeal of this book.  After all, what middle-aged, middle-class person is seriously scared of vampires or aliens?  No sir, it's that brain rot that packs the real wallop, terror-wise.

So.  Dr Jennifer White is 64 and at home with her live-in companion, Madeleine.  Her best friend, Amanda, has been murdered.  Sometimes Jennifer is aware of that fact, and sometimes not.  Her hyper-competent daughter Fiona is a frequent presence, as is her son Mark, whose demands for money are ominous.  Who killed Amanda?  Given Jennifer's mental state, beautifully drawn by LaPlante, it's entirely possible that Jennifer's guilty and doesn't know it.  But you won't be sure until the very end.
