If you knew me, by Anne Roiphe



Written in 1993, this short novel is a tender romance with a sad secret.  Leah is a fortyish unmarried scientist who feels burned out.  She is taking some time out from her research job to spend the winter at the summer cottage on the ocean that she has inherited from her immigrant parents.  Walking on the beach one day, she sees Ollie struggling with and overweight and distraught woman who has suddenly thrown herself into the ocean.  She helps him retrieve the woman, who turns out to be his mentally challenged sister, Sally, and Leah and Ollie form a tentative friendship which slowly blooms into something more.  212 pp.
