The Story of My Teeth by Valeria Luiselli, translated from the Spanish by Christina MacSweeney, 195 pages.
Fascinating, nimble and lively; this short novel is bristling with loud declamations about imaginary rules governing auctions, life, and the world. Gustavo, "Highway," Sanchez Sanchez begins his work life as a security guard, but is soon promoted. Through a series of work-sponsored classes, Highway finds his true calling, that of auctioneer. Revolving around the finer philosophical points of auctioneering and life, Luiselli and her assured and imaginative narrator (assured even when he veers toward madness) explore art, collections, relationships, and story. This is a strange and stellar work.
