Fortune Smiles: Stories by Adam Johnson, 304 pages.
A stunning collection of stories from the author of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner and ALA Notable book, The Orphan Master's Son.
Johnson's stories seen to take the reader on a ride that is always headed towards tragedy.
Even when you know that a story has not ended well for the fiercely flawed but sympathetic characters, there is still a glimmer, or at least the illusion, of hope for them. The title story, which ends the collection, explores the relationship between two reluctant North Korean defectors, both of them forgers, dealers in stolen cars and fake lottery tickets, as they try to adjust to life in the south.
There is a heartbreaking story about a man, and his new girlfriend in post-Katrina New Orleans, and one about a programmer /coder trying to make sense of his wife's illness, with the help of the recently assassinated President.
One of my favorites.
