The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley, 380 pages
The book begins as Zan wakes up with no memory but a lot of pain and a few gnarly scars. The woman who attends her at her awakening is Jayd, who Zan cannot remember but is simultaneously drawn to and wary of. Once Zan heals up, Jayd tells her that she must attempt to gain entry to another planet again (how many times is it now?) so that their people and world can be saved. Meanwhile, Jayd has grand plans that involve a lot of cunning and political backstabbing...but is Zan one of her marks?
This book is confusing — though I think it's meant to be, given Zan's memory loss — and much grosser than I anticipated, given that the planets and everything on them all seem to be made of human flesh (or something interchangeable with it). I'm honestly torn on how I feel about this book, though I can't wait to talk to the Orcs & Aliens about it on Monday night.
