The Middle Passage

The Middle Passage / Charles Johnson, 209 p.

This title generated lots of discussion at the latest meeting of The Classics Book Group.  Rutherford Calhoun is a freed slave who stows away on a ship bound for the west coast of Africa whose captain plans to illegally take on slaves.  Part tall-tale, part metaphor, part suspenseful adventure, and often funny, this novel was controversial at publication and seems to be still.
