Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown, 544 pages.
Dee Brown's classic history of the  western part of the United States from the native peoples' perspective. A chronicle of policies ignored, policies reversed, greed, lies, treaties broken, misplaced blame and lots of murder. Famous men have their venal, bloodthirsty, vain, inhumane, and cowardly sides shown: Kit Carson, William Tecumseh Sherman, Phil Sheridan, and George Armstrong Custer among them.
The main part of Brown's history covers the mid to late nineteenth century, from the removal of the Navaho, through the Sand Creek massacre, the Powder River, the Washita, the Little Big Horn, and Wounded Knee. Sitting Bull, Gall, Chief Joseph, Captain Jack, Standing Bear, and Big Foot all get at least part of their story told.
