Friends with Boys by Faith Erin Hicks; young adult, coming of age, ghost stories; 224 pages
Maggie is the youngest child of four, and the only girl. She and her brothers were all homeschooled by their mother, but as Maggie is now old enough for high school, their mom has left her family, leaving Maggie to face the first day of public school alone. To make matters worse, she's haunted by the ghost of a sea captain's widow, who just won't stop following her.
I LOVED this book. Maggie is a great character, and her relationships with her brothers are one of the best parts of this story. Yes, there's a ghost, and I wanted to know what was going on with that, but really I was far more interested in how Maggie would do at school, who her friends would be, how she'd deal with her family's fragmentation, and what's up with Alistair and the volleyball team. The only weak spot here was the ending: I really felt like this was a chapter in a larger story, rather than a story all on its own. I hope Hicks will write more about these characters! I'd love to revisit them in a year and see how they're doing!
