A collection of short stories that starts with the titular selection. Luck is born in Roaring Camp to a prostitute who dies in childbirth. The other camp residents are all men but they decide to try to raise the baby. Convinced that the baby is bringing them luck, he goes from being known as "The Kid" to Thomas Luck. The camp changes quite a bit now that the residents are responsible for a child. There is no more fighting and drunkenness and the personal cleanliness of each residence is upgraded.
This is the first of many stories set in the rugged west and many focusing on the individuals who make a go of it in harsh circumstances.
