Half a War and Half the World both by Joe Abercrombie, 366 pages and 366 pages
The second and third volumes of Abercrombie's more YA-friendly "Shattered Seas Trilogy. Not as violent as his "First Law" books, or the stand-alone books set in that same world (Best Served Cold was my favorite). Yarvi, one of the main characters throughout this series, goes from being a damaged prince who stands in the way of his newly born half-brother's claim to the throne in the first book, to a minister who puts together a coalition of kingdoms that stand against the high king. A large cast of cynical characters, an infinite series of betrayals, almost-betrayals, and unexpected bits of loyalty, keep this going over three books, but it does seem to drag a bit. I enjoyed the series, but the earlier books were edgier and more exciting.
