Bad Days in History: a Gleefully Grim Chronicle of Misfortune, Mayhem, and Misery for Every Day of the Year by Michael Farquhar, 479 pages.
A day-by-day accounting of historical events that more or less meet the criteria sent forth in the sub-title. Not the best of its kind but not the worst. Decades ago, I enjoyed these brief glimpses into bits of history that were new to me, but having read a little history in more depth, many of these anecdotes seem forced into a weird context to fit the format, with a bias towards making everything seem grimly humorous, and everyone seem like a bufoonish villian. Not a format that engages the reader, but it is what it is.
