Stormy Weather, by Carl Hiaasen

A great author for “beach reading” season.  More a series of hilarious character sketches loosely attached to a plot than a novel, the book is set in the Florida that the author obviously knows well and loves, and the despoiling of its fragile environment outrages him.  A huge hurricane is coming and newly-weds Max and Bonnie Lamb, there for a honeymoon in Orlando, rush into the storm, rather than away – Max is hoping to videotape memorable moments to post online and make their fortune.  Instead he is kidnapped by the crazy ex-governor, now a mythic figure called Skink who lives in the swamps.  Other scam artists, hoping to capitalize on the disaster (by faking injuries) show up; a crooked building inspector who conducted “drive-by” inspections and the salesman of the now flattened sub-standard trailer homes are stalked by an irate mobster whose mother was killed as a result; and a young man who inherited his uncle’s wild game preserve is searching for the escaped exotic animals.  The stories begin to intertwine.  388 pp.
