Early Riser

Early Riser / Jasper Fforde, read by Thomas Hunt, 406 pgs.

Charlie Worthing is a Winter Consul novice which means his job is to keep the hibernating human population safe through the winter.  Climates have changed and the winter is so brutal, most people take the drug Morphenox to help them sleep through it.  Morphenox leaves a percentage of users as something like zombies.  Mostly brain dead but still living.  These people are usually capable of performing some simple tasks such as washing dishes or digging ditches.  They can be employed for 16 hours a day because they have no feelings or knowledge of what they are doing.  Charlie happens upon a bit of a scandal, the drug company who makes Morphenox is looking to increase profits and keep the flow of cheap labor going.  With an entertaining cast of characters, none of whom Charlie can trust at first, can Charlie solve the mysteries surrounding Sector 12 and Hiber Tech?  Enjoyable but maybe 15% too long.
