Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump

Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump by Rick Reilly (2019) 244 pages

Here's an entertainingly fast-paced book written by Reilly, who formerly wrote for Sports Illustrated and ESPN, and who also appeared on ESPN. Names are dropped right and left, filling in information I'd heard in the past, much of it from when Donald Trump was running for president. The portrait of Trump is somewhat different from what I'd expected: Even as he cheats nonstop during golfing outings, many of those who have golfed with him say it doesn't matter, that Trump is just so fun to be with. However, that is not a unanimous consensus; there are also those who feel that Trump took the gentleman's (and gentlewoman's) game of golf and basically ruined it.

Reilly's chapters are all compellingly titled: "The Big Lie," "You Ain't No Ballerina," "Professional Pest," etc. The chapter "Trump v. Obama" is filled with golf data comparing the two men. Reilly  touches on other parts of Trump's life now and then, such as when he highlights some golf course contractors who were stiffed by Trump when it was time to be paid. Reilly also tells a story that during one golf tournament, Trump's girlfriend at the time, Marla Maples, arrived with a wedding dress in her suitcase, expecting to be married that afternoon, but Donald "86'd it at the last minute."

Supporters as well as opponents of Trump will find something to like in this book, just not at the same time.
