The library book

The library book / Susan Orlean, 317 pgs.

There are so few perfect books in the world but this might be one of them.  Orlean is, as we all know, an excellent writer and now she turns her gaze to libraries.  In particular, she revisits the fire that in 1986 burned for 36 hours in the Los Angeles Central library.  Was it arson?  There was a long investigation and a major suspect who basically lied in every interview.  In the end, the case was weak and he was never charged.  In addition to the history of the LAPL and the mysterious fire, we learn about Orlean's lifelong love of libraries and reading.  She has built a lot of relationships with librarians and seems to "get" the profession like few others who don't work in it.  I think I know what everyone on my list is getting for Christmas this year!
