American Pharoah: The Untold Story of the Triple Crown Winner's Legendary Rise by Joe Drape 292 pp.
In honor of the 2018 Kentucky Derby the Amazon audio book company, Audible, announced that it's members would get a free copy of this book to download if the horse named Audible won the race. Sadly, Audible only came in third behind Justify and Good Magic. But members were still given this book for free. I'm not a horse racing fan but will occasionally watch a big race -- but not this one.
So, this book is the biography (Is it called a biography if it is about an animal?) of the 2015 Triple Crown winner from his conception to his retirement. It is also the story of the breeder, trainer, and jockey that managed the big stallion's life and led him to his phenomenal career. Granted, American Pharoah was born with all the physical attributes to make him a champion and a great temperament. Trainer Bob Baffert (who also trained this year's Derby winner) and jockey Victor Espinoza learned the horse and its needs well to make it easy for American Pharoah to do his job of running. There is brief biographical information about both of them and owner/breeder Ahmed Zayat. And there are multiple stories about the permanent misspelling of the horse's name blaming an assortment of people and the Jockey Club. I fully admit I never would have selected this book under any other circumstance than being given a free copy but it turned out to be quite interesting and accessible even if you aren't a racing fan.
