When Rupert Falkes dies of cancer at the relatively young
age of 65, he leaves behind him an elegant life, an elegant wife, and five
successful Princeton-educated sons.
After his funeral, his wife Eleanor is contacted by a woman claiming to
have had a relationship with Rupert resulting in two further sons. The stories of each of these sons, and the
women in Rupert’s life, alternate chapters.
Rupert himself had been a foundling, raised in an orphanage and by the
kindly vicar that ran it. It’s a bit of
a beach book in some ways, but a satisfying read. 254 pp.
