Churchill and the King: the Wartime Alliance of Winston Churchill and King George VI by Kenneth Weisbrode 208 pp.
Had it not been for the crisis that was World War II Winston Churchill and King George VI probably would not have developed the close working relationship and the friendship that grew from it. Churchill reveled in his persona as Britain's savior while the shy king quietly supported in his own way. Their working relationship developed during their weekly working lunches which sometimes had to be moved to the bomb shelter. Because of their similar upbringing and experiences they found they had much in common. The two former military men often had diverging views on battle strategy and the King had to frequently temper Churchill's "go for it" attitude with milder "don't be so hasty" counsel. I found this all very interesting because I knew little of the part the King played during WWII other than offering moral support to the people of England.
