The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman 181 pp.
This is a dark fairy tale for adults. The narrator revisits events that took place forty years earlier, when he was seven years old. His memories are sketchy at first but then return in more detail. The story emerges about the suicide of a lodger, Lettie Hempstock, the magical eleven year old girl who lives down the lane with her equally magical mother and grandmother, and an evil entity that tries to take over the boy and his family. Gaiman does an excellent job of building the suspense to the ultimate confrontation. The "ocean" of title refers to the pond at the farm which Lettie calls "her ocean." I listened to the audio version narrated by the author and I always enjoy his self-narrated books.
