Wild Born by Brandon Mull 202 pp.
This is the first book in Mull's new fantasy series Spirit Animals. In the land of Erdos, at the age of eleven everyone is given a sip of the Nectar as part of their transition to adulthood. For a few, the nectar sparks the arrival of their spirit animal and their entry into the society of the "green cloaks." Four children, Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan, don't just receive spirit animals. Each has summoned a beast of legend, a wolf, leopard, panda, and gyrfalcon. They and their animals must band together to defeat the dark forces from the past that threaten Erdos and all who live there. Mull has given this series a great beginning and ends the book with just enough of a cliffhanger to make readers want more. I'll be recommending this to kids who like Kathryn Lasky's The Guardians of Ga'Hoole and Erin Hunter's Warriors as well as Mull's Fablehaven series.
