Joy: and 52 Other Very Short Stories / Erin McGraw, 290 p.
Joy is the topic, along with rage, violence, and disappointment in these 53 sketches. I very much enjoyed racing through this collection of smart and compassionate pieces. There is bitterness here, but also humor, and the writing shows terrific range without showy displays of cleverness. Some favorites: "Teeth," in which a dental receptionist sums up the state of class in America in a couple of rotten extractions, "Rock and Roll," which includes geriatric rockers on tour in the Midwest, and "Pariah," featuring a small-town mailman on the outs with the people he serves. Very nice.
