Once Upon a River

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield  464 pp.

One rainy winter night an injured man carries a young girl into an ancient inn in a village on the Thames. The little girl is pronounced dead but is later discovered to be alive. From there emerges a novel of multiple stories involving missing children, mourning families, found children, a prodigal son, a bit of romance, and stolen pigs. The different plots diverge and come together again in a myriad of ways all leading to a happy ending (not a spoiler--the last chapter is titled "Happily Ever After"). Setterfield has created believable characters, plausible plots, and an intricate tale that is just as good as her first novel The Thirteenth Tale. I listened to the audiobook downloaded from Overdrive.
