This is only a test / B. J. Hollars, 166 pgs.
Huddled in the bathtub with his wife and dog, a tornado touches down nearby. What they haven't told anyone yet, there are really four in the tub. Just days prior, the pregnancy test came up positive. This collection of essays focus a lot on domestic life, everyday things like summer camp and moving but all look through a lens of fear and death. At summer camp, years ago, a child died while hiding in an abandoned refrigerator. A young man drowns in the river behind the new house where the couple moves. The author's young son gets a fever that won't go away but there is no diagnosis. Somehow each of these essays is heat warming, not just fear inducing. It is more like a discussion of fear than something that will make you afraid. A poor description but a wonderful book.
