Remembrance of Things I Forgot by Bob Smith, 263 pages
John has finally decided to break up with Taylor, his boyfriend of 15 years, a physicist and a Republican (this last bit is what really tipped the scales in favor of the breakup). But when it comes time to have the relationship-ending chat, Taylor spoils the moment by announcing that he has finally created a working time machine. John agrees to go see the machine and manages to accidentally get sent back to 1986, and meet his 24-year-old self (something beyond unnerving). As always happens in time travel stories, however, John also seizes the opportunity to make some changes, including preventing his sister's suicide, stopping Taylor from becoming a Republican, and keeping George W. Bush from being elected president.
Remembrance of Things I Forgot is funny, smart, sweet, and full of political jabs that somehow manage to not come across as super mean. My only regret came when I flipped to the back to see how many pages it was, and managed to spoil the ending by seeing a single word in the last sentence. D'oh! So learn from my mistake, and don't do that. But read it. It's awesome.
