Half Bad by Sally Green, 394 pages
Nathan is an anomaly among the witches living in secret in England - he's half Black and half White. Born to a White witch mother but the son of the notorious Black witch, Marcus, Nathan deals with being an outcast all his life. And it doesn't help that the council that oversees witches in the United Kingdom is determined to limit everything he does under the pretense of safety. But the desire to know his father, and ultimately, himself, soon begins to trump his willingness to sort-of follow the rules, even as the council weighs using him to bring Marcus out of hiding to end him once and for all.
Half Bad isn't half bad (I have been dying to make that pun). But it's also not exactly great. Of course, I couldn't help spend time thinking about how it reminds me of Harry Potter, just without the magical school, and that never helps the situation. It's definitely grittier than Harry Potter, and the system of magic is interesting. The council regulating and watching the witches has potential to be truly evil, and I'm ready for the relationship between Nathan and his father in the two following books (because YA comes in threes) to be fleshed out more. I'm interested to see what happens, but I'm also not invested, so we'll see how the next book goes.
