Can't we talk about something more pleasant? / Roz Chast 228 pgs.
Roz Chast's parents were getting older and more frail but still living in the apartment she grew up in. Incredibly dependent on each other and very devoted. Roz's mom is used to being in charge and takes care of business but as their health fails, it gets harder and harder. Roz has to step in but the unpleasant childhood memories and the fragile relationship with her parents makes this even more stressful. She feels bad for not wanting to get involved. She feels bad when she is involved. There is a lot of resentment and that is just another thing to feel bad about. Eventually, her parents move to assisted living and they continue to fail. Her father dies and the idea of her mother on her own is something she has never known. Her mother lives for several more years and the issue becomes the money needed to keep additional help needed to be with her 24 hours a day. This memoir is shocking, sad and the direction we are all going.
