The Signature of All Things / Elizabeth Gilbert 501 pgs.
This is a beautiful book about a woman botanist in the 1800's. The Whittaker family is central character but but in many ways it is Alma, the daughter of Henry and Beatrix who is the heart of the novel. Alma is brilliant and follows her parents into the love of plants, gardens and eventually a specialization in moss. In some ways Alma's life is very cloistered and small but in other ways she has it all...except a love life. Her efforts to correct this part turn out interesting. In the end, I cared so much about Alma I was willing to follow her on her adventures and through a few silly parts. I think this book really made me think about how it is never to late to make changes and that life is what you make of it.
