The Morels/Christopher Hacker 354 pgs.
Arthur Morel was a musical prodigy in his youth but seems like an ordinary family man when he reconnects with his old school mate Chris. Arthur's life seems perfect and perfectly normal which is a bit surprising to the narrator because his salient memory of Arthur the younger is the act that got him kicked out of their music school. Chris is working on a film project with some guys who live in Arthur's building so they become reacquainted. Chris soon finds out that things aren't exactly what them seem. Arthur publishes his second book, a fictional account of a family, all of whom resemble his own including the having the same names. The book ends with a scene so troubling that Arthur's life starts to unravel. I don't want to give away too many details but this is the kind of book that you don't know where it is going and then when it gets there, it sort of hits you in the face, so to speak. In the end, you wonder if anything like this could really happen. How much do our origins affect how we turn out?
