Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear

Adrift in Currents Clean and Clear by Seanan McGuire, 146 pages

Until she was 9, Nadya lived in a Russian orphanage, where she was often overlooked by prospective parents because she was missing most of one arm. But she was OK with that, devoting her time to helping her orphanage "siblings" find adoptive parents instead. However, she was eventually scooped up by a missionary family from Colorado, who were intent on giving her the best life possible, complete with a prosthetic arm that she didn't really want or need. Nadya's affinity for turtles eventually leads her to the neighborhood pond and a door to an incredible world filled with giant turtles and an underwater society unlike anything she's experienced on Earth.

I'm not even sure which installment of the Wayward Children series this book is, but I can tell you that once again, it's excellently written, with kindness and care toward its protagonist, and creativity galore with the portal world. Even though this is well into the series, the way in which the series is written makes it possible to pick up this tale on its own, and explore the series (which started with Every Heart a Doorway) or not as you wish. Highly recommend this quiet story, and the series to which it belongs.
