Being Mortal: Medicine and what matters in the end / Atul Gawande 282 pgs.
Atul Gawande writes a brilliant book about the end of life and how we are (mis)handling it. He discusses nursing homes, assisted living, the role of doctors, the role of patient, and so much more. I found the way he boiled down the indignities of aging great to explain the ideas of what we want for our elderly parents in contrast to what the elderly actually want. It is kind of eye opening to realize how "assisted living" is marketed.
In the end, we all just want to be happy. We want things that are important to us to be respected and made doable if at all possible. I'm not sure this book will get rid of all the oddness that surrounds death and aging in our culture but it sure did help me.
