People of the Long House by W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear 300 pp.
This is one of the later novels in the First North Americans series by the Gears. Archaeologists and historians by profession, the Gears try to be as accurate as possible about the ways of the early Native Americans. This book is the first in a trilogy about the Iroquois people. A raiding party thought to be from an enemy village has kidnapped the children of the war chief of Yellowtail Village. Chief Koracoo and her deputy/husband Gonda go in search of the children but soon learn the kidnapper is actually the evil Gannajero, the trader who kidnaps children for nefarious purposes. Gannajero possesses evil magic that makes her unstoppable until the appearance of a mysterious forest spirit. I've read other novels in this series and this one was okay but not the best. I admit I was a bit bored in the middle of the story. The ending is open to lead into the next volume of the trilogy. I haven't decided if I will continue with it.
