The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro 317 pp.
Ishiguro does not write just your everyday story. This novel is hard to describe and totally unlike the other novels of his that I've read. It takes place in the darkest times of the Middle Ages as Britain is in decline, wars are plentiful, and Arthur is dead. Axl and Beatrice are an elderly couple suffering from their age and the strange mist that seems to impede everyone's memory. They set off on a quest to find the son they have not seen in years. Along the way they encounter knights, including an aged Sir Gawain of the late King Arthur's round table, warriors, monks, ogres, a dragon, misery, treachery, and danger. Throughout the journey they remained devotedly attached to each other despite the hardships and the memories that come and go. I'm not sure what I think about this one but it's worth reading.
