Body Surfing by Anita Shreve 295 pp.
Sydney is alone after two marriages ended (one through divorce, the other, death) before she was thirty. She takes on a summer job as the tutor to Julie, the beautiful but slow daughter of the wealthy Edwards family while she tries to figure out what to do with her life. The family has multiple issues including a recurring feud between the adult sons, Mrs. Edward's anti-Semitic dislike of Sydney, and the parents denial that Julie is no longer a child. Sydney becomes involved with one of the sons. When Julie disappears, the family goes into a tailspin. Sydney is caught in the middle of it all. It's a bit predictable and, in my opinion, just an okay book.
