Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke, audiobook read by Lynn Redgrave, 534 pages.

We listened to part of this book on our trip to Chicago over the holidays, my son is reading it, and my wife is reading it in the original German. I finished up listening to the book on CD while painting the baby's room. It's a great story about a book within the book, bibliophiles, and characters that come to life, but not in a good way. Meggie and her dad Mo carry on after Meggie's mom disappeared. Meggie thinks her mom just left one day, and it's not until a man named Dustfinger shows up that she starts to learn the truth. Dustfinger, Basta, the Magpie, and Capricorn are all very concerned with the book within this book, also named Inkheart. Mo has the last copy, and he also has a particular power, unknown to his daughter, that can bring great fortune to or endanger all the characters. Funke, author of the equally wonderful The Thief Lord, tells a fascinating tale, and Lynn Redgrave does, as one would expect, a great job reading the tale.
