The rivalries escalate and become very bloody- because some of the "baddies" have twisted special "Powers". Grant creates a world, okay, a somewhat twisted world with kids trying to cope without adults and weird plagues, creatures, etc. thrown at them.I recommend starting this book on a Friday night or Saturday morning, because once you start it, you won't want to put it down for long.
