The Book of Bright Ideas, by Sandra Kring, 310 pp.

I was hooked on this little gem from the donations shelf before I realized MLC didn't have a copy in the catalogue. No worries! I'm entering it this afternoon. The setting is small-town Wisconsin in the early 60s, where nothing much happens to the two Peters families until the Malone sisters come to town. Big-sister Freeda and nine-year-old Winnalee move into now-deceased Grandma Mae's house, and nothing--for also-9 Evelyn "Button" Peters, her Ma, and Aunt Verdy--is ever the same.
